I haven't seen Akasha Gopuram and Ore Kadal, the other two serious contenders for the film awards. All awards are subjective their merits are relative most of the time. But havng seen Paradesi and Nalu Pennungal, I'm not surprised that Adayalangal won critical acclaim. I still don't know whether Adayalangal deserved to be the best film. How many recent Malayalam movies could produce similar feelings in the ticket-payer? That I left the screening of Adayalangal without thinking that I wasted my three hours should have been enough to cheer up its director Sasi and the movie crew. I even doubted whether it will be a documentary on Nanthanar (Ramakrishnan), the short story writer from Perinthalmanna, who committed suicide after a life of military angst. I began to watch Sasi's Adayalangal with dread.
Kumaran (Akasha Gopuram) and P T Kunhumohammad (Paradesi who all had movies eyeing the award for the best feature film. The verdicat has shocked many, inlcuding directors Adoor Gopalakrishnan (Nalu Pennungal), Shyamaprasad (Ore Kadal), K.P. Sasi has won the Kerala State award for best director, Adayalangal is the best film and the movie's cameraman Radhakrishnan is the best cinematographer. Sasi's Adayalangal, the film chosen by Jahnu Barua-led jury as the best feature film in the Kerala State film awards.

It was a hugely satisfying experience because I had to work a lot and I don’t think I could have made a better beginning in an out-and-out commercial film,” said Padmasurya. “I feel this is the best beginning I could have made in the film industry. Padmasurya said he had no regrets making his debut with parallel cinema. It also delves into the relationship between his mother and his lady love played by Jyothirmayee,” said Sasi.
“I am delighted that the film is still relevant because it brings out the emotions of a soldier, Gopi (Padmasurya). The movie is a socio-political take on the futility of war and the experience of the youth during the time of the Second World War. Sasi can take pride that his film won the state awards, edging out acclaimed director Adoor Gopalakrishnan’s “Naalu Pennungal”. Apart from being Sasi’s first film, “Adayalangal” is also the debut vehicle of actor Govind Padmasurya and producer Aravind Venugopal.
